Sunday 4 June 2017

Great Black Back Gull P:79A ringed June 2014 has so far given 54 sightings up to and including the latest on the 2 June 2017 on the Axe Estuary Devon.

First sighting was on the Exe Estuary also in Devon by Lee Collins, the subsequent 53 sightings have all been from the Axe. Majority of which have come from Ian McLean including the latest with supporting sightings from Mike Hill.

We mention the number of sightings to high light the amount of time, patience and dedication to ring reading put in by many. We are very appreciative of every single sighting we receive, thank you.
GBBGull P:22B ringed June 2014 had an eventful start to life.

First sighted May 2015 in Saint Guenole Brittany by Pascal Bounie in an oiled state with a leg injury, it evaded capture at that time. Any injured animal or bird is very hard to catch, due to heightened survival instincts.

                                                 Pascal Bounie©  14th May 2015

                                                      Dirk Raes ©  11th Sept 2015

Luckily for this particular Gull someone was successful in catching it and bringing it back to full health.

We have 11 sightings during 2015, 2 during 2016 and 2 so far for 2017 thanks to all the observers who have sent in sightings and photos particularly Pascal Bounie.

Monday 29 May 2017

Alan Payne has had another sighting of GBBGull P:46A on the 27th May near to Looe Cornwall at Downderry still in the same area as the day before.

Herring Gull 635 ringed June 2016 on the Break Water previously seen on the Axe Estuary Devon by Ian McLean was sighted at Lodmoor RSPB Reserve Weymouth 22nd May in the Gull roost not far from its fledging site.

Ian McLean sent in his weekly list of our Gulls from the Axe Estuary GBBGull P:64B seen 27th May a regular on the Axe and a GBBG ringed by us last June but has a Herring Gull Darvic B/W 626 seen also on the 27th May.

Even with the best efforts with these large Gulls, errors do occur but they are extremely rare. There is a 0.5mm difference in the inner diameter of the rings.

Saturday 27 May 2017

Two GBBGull's sat on roof in Seaton Cornwall may not seem very exciting, but to our fledgling Gull project ( now in its 7th year with Herring Gull's and 6th year with GBBGull's ) it possibly is.

Why possibly?

It is the first sighting we have received to date seen on 26th May 2017, of two Gull's giving the observer Alan Payne the impression they are a pair.

Our Gull P:46A ringed June 2012, so now an adult appeared smaller than the accompanying Gull, hopefully a Male.

P:46A has been sighted in this area of Cornwall along with one sighting in Guernsey, several times since fledging.
